A Nancy Wilson / Cannonball Adderley Tribute: A live re-creation of their seminal 1962 album

More about the show, the band, and the vocalist

In my opinion Nancy Wilson defines the role of singer/stylist in a jazz setting. Cannonball first heard her in Nancy’s hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

This album features Nat Adderley on cornet, Joe Zawinul (first time recording with Cannonball) on piano, Sam Jones on bass and, Louis Hayes on drums.

This was originally a quintet recording with a vocalist. I tried to find accurate transcriptions of the songs but only ended up getting frustrated at what I found.

Because of this I transcribed practically the whole album and rearranged it adding a trombone and guitar to the standard instrumentation.

You will experience some of the area’s best players with Amanda Gardier (sax), Freddie Mendoza (trombone), Scott Routenberg (piano), Nick Tucker (bass), Joel Tucker (guitar), Cassius Goens (drums) and the incredible Akili McDuffy on vocals.

 Sincerely,

Mark Buselli (arranger, bandleader, trumpet)

About Akili McDuffey

McDuffey fronted for the Avenue Indy Jazz Quintet and the Midcoast Swing Orchestra Summertime concerts.  Audience members described her as “Harmonically imaginative“      “Soft but gritty”     “Wistful and silky smooth.”

“Akili breathes new life into the vocals of Ella Fitzgerald and Nancy Wilson

with a voice that transports you to another time and place.”

Sunday in the Pocket featuring the MidCoast Swing Orchestra

Join in for an encore performance of the MidCoast Swing Orchestra’s SOLD OUT August 2020 concert at the IndyFringe PocketPark

Return to the heady days of the 1930s & 1940s swing band era.  Hear the music and stylings of the great early jazz bands such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Lunceford, Woody Herman, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Les Brown, and more.

About the MidCoast Swing Orchestra
The swing band is made up of some of the finest professional musicians in Indiana, including musicians who frequently perform with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Pops, Broadway show pit orchestras, recording sessions, and live Star acts at venues throughout the Midwest.  Indianapolis was (and still is) a crossroads for jazz and home to many jazz luminaries. The Midcoast Swing Orchestra carries on that tradition, with sizzling jazz solos, tight ensemble playing and the energy to inspire dancers to tear up the dance floor.  (and YES we plan to have "chalked off" appropriately distanced dance squares available!!)

About Avenue Indy:
“They can sound like a big swing band, reconfigure into a trio or quartet, and deliver a symphonic moment.   What they don’t do is spin off into extended solos or take the long road home to the initial melody having gotten off at the wrong freeway exit.  Rather, this is the Blue Roads edition of jazz in the hometown where playing a dozen tunes, not a mere three or four, in a set was the norm.”   --- Rita Kohn, NUVO
